Tofig Yagublu reports to court about his hunger strike
Tofig Yagublu, a member of the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) and the "Musavat" Party, claimed the biased nature of the trial in his criminal case on disorderly conduct. The politician declared going on a hunger strike.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Tofig Yagublu was detained on March 22. The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reported that the activist caused a road traffic accident and attacked a married couple. Tofig Yagublu called himself a victim of provocation. He considers the case to be fabricated and pleads not guilty.
Today, Tofig Yagublu has delivered his final speech at the Nizami District Court. According to Nigyar Khazi, a daughter of the politician, who attended the trial, her father doubted the independence of the judge. "Do you want me not to speak at all? Please claim an order coming from the presidential administration," the daughter quoted Tofig Yagublu as saying.
According to Nigyar Khazi, Tofig Yagublu went on the hunger strike. "I will go to the bitter end and I will win. Traditions of democracy and rule of law should reign in the country," Tofig Yagublu claimed.
Nigyar Khazi noted that the judge interrupted Tofig Yagublu several times and requested him "to speak to the point." Finally, without letting Tofig Yagublu finish his speech, the judge interrupted the court hearing and announced that the verdict would be read out on September 3.
