Authorities and opposition blame each other for worsened Covid-19 situation in Georgia

The increase in the number of coronavirus infections is associated with oppositional rallies taking place in the country, the participants of which ignore the restrictions, sources from Georgian authorities assert. In its turn, the opposition has parried that authorities are to blame for the worsened epidemiological situation, since they are doing nothing to overcome the crisis.

According to Amiran Gamkrelidze, the head of the National Centre for Disease Control, Georgia is at the peak of the virus spread; and the number of cases will still increase.

Maya Tskitishvili, the Regional Development Minister, has blamed the opposition for the increase in the number of coronavirus infection cases. "Irresponsible political rallies aggravate the virus dynamics," the Public Broadcaster quotes her as saying.

"We encourage a mobility decrease, and at the same time we see such rallies and other events in the streets where no rules are observed and, on the contrary, there are even calls not to follow the rules," said the Minister.

In their turn, opponents to the authorities blame the "Georgian Dream" Party for the worsening of the epidemiological situation.

"It's better to move from such immoral accusations to the search for real ways out of the crisis," said Elena Khoshtariya, a member of the "European Georgia" Party, on air of the "Mtavari Arkhi" TV Channel.

According to Zaal Udumashvili, a member of the United National Movement, such accusations are groundless, since "the rallies were held in outdoor areas."
