French Senate favours recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh's independence

305 French Senators have supported the resolution on the need to recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh. The Armenian Prime Minister and the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Nagorno-Karabakh have welcomed the resolution, while Azerbaijani authorities have sharply criticized it.

According to point 20 of the resolution, the Senate calls on the French Government to recognize Nagorno-Karabakh, calling this step "an instrument of negotiations to establish a lasting peace."

305 French Senators voted in favour of the resolution, and only one voted against it.

Nikol Pashinyan, the Armenian Premier, has stated that the resolution is a "historic decision," and Masis Mailyan, the head of the Nagorno-Karabakh MFA, has expressed gratitude to French Senators.

In his turn, Khikmet Gadjiev, an assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, has sharply criticized the Senate's decision. The document was adopted "in the name of narrow political ambitions, along with a gross violation of the international law, the UN Charter and the relevant UN Security Council's resolutions," the APA News Agency quoted him as saying.
