Resident of North Ossetia, Georgy Guev, continues fighting against his verdict

The defence of Georgy Guev, a resident of North Ossetia, intends to seek a mitigation or cancellation of the verdict passed on his case, his advocate has stated. In their turn, rights defenders believe that the practice shows that it is practically impossible to change a court judgement on the case of financing terrorism.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 20, 2020, a court in Moscow sentenced Guev to six years in prison. Investigators claim that in 2015-2019, he raised money for the militants of the "Islamic State" (IS), a terrorist organization banned in Russia, as well as for Israil Akhmednabiev (Abu Umar Sasitlinsky – a famous Dagestani preacher), the founder of the Islamic Fund "Mukhadjirun", who was wanted within a terrorism case.

It is practically impossible to achieve a cancellation of a sentence or a mitigation of the prison term in cases of financing terrorism, said Svetlana Gannushkina, the chair of the "Civil Assistance" Committee*. At the same time, according to her story, very often accusations under this article are unjustified.

When special services announced the detention of terrorists' accomplice, everyone had doubts about Guev's involvement, said Ruslan Totrov, the editor of the "Osnova" (Basis) edition. "Guev is a representative of an educated Muslim stratum, a professional in the field of financial markets, a person with a transparent biography," Mr Totrov has noted.
