ECtHR obliges Russia to pay compensation to residents of Borozdinovskaya village

The Strasbourg Court has found that the Russian authorities are responsible for the disappearance during a special operation and the probable deaths of eleven residents of the Borozdinovskaya village in Chechnya, ill-treatment, discrimination, and torture. The European Court has obliged Russia to pay compensation to 71 villagers in the amount exceeding 1.8 million euros.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on the night of June 4-5, 2005, about 100 unidentified fighters of the law enforcement bodies stationed in Chechnya raided the village of Borozdinovskaya, killed one, and took eleven other villagers away with them to some unknown destination.

Today, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has granted the complaints of the majority of residents of the Borozdinovskaya village, who demanded compensation for the actions of the Russian military personnel during the special operation in 2005. The list of plaintiffs included 126 names, and 71 of them were awarded monetary compensation. The complainants were awarded compensation for non-pecuniary damage in the amount of 1,842,300 euros, and most of them were also awarded compensation for legal costs ranging from 500 euros to 13,200 euros.

Residents of the Borozdinovskaya village filed the complaints in connection with the special operation held by the “Vostok” battalion in 2005. The complainants claimed that the military personnel had unlawfully searched their houses, arrested, tortured, and killed local residents, and set four houses on fire. Besides, the residents of the Borozdinovskaya village also stated that the national authorities failed to conduct an effective investigation into those tragic events, the ECtHR emphasized.
