Memo for tourists coming to North Ossetia appeared after Chechnya and Dagestan

In North Ossetia, the use of strong alcohol is unacceptable, one should not show one's feelings in public and smoke, says the memo for tourists. The booklet also prescribes the dress code for visiting mountain sanctuaries.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in June, 2021, a video of an explicit dance against mountains and a traditional stone tower sparked a controversy over restrictions on tourists in North Ossetia. Instagram users offered to hand out booklets to tourists with a story about local customs and prohibitions, and in case of violations, seek a public apology.

In 2019, Chechnya also issued a memo with a dress code for tourists. Women were advised to avoid provocative clothes, and men – shorts and sleeveless T-shirts.

Volunteers have drafted a memo for tourists in North Ossetia, the "Ossetia" Telegram channel has informed. The dress code is prescribed only for visiting holy places in the mountains. "Men are not advised to enter sanctuaries in shorts and sleeveless T-shirts. Women are only allowed to visit sanctuaries dressed in long robes that hide their arms and legs, and with headscarves," the booklet says.

In the fall of 2020, social network users were outraged by the rap artist Djigan's visit to the Ossetian sanctuary "Rekom". Contrary to the tradition, he failed to take off his shoes.

In June, ideas of Irina Makoeva, the head of the Women's Committee of the social movement "Ossetians' Supreme Council" (Styr Nykhas), about how Ossetian girls should dress, triggered resonance. The "Khotae" (Sisters) movement criticized Makoeva's instructions.
