ECtHR stands up for four Armenian POWs

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has ruled to apply security measures in relation of four Armenian soldiers who were taken prisoners of war (POWs) by Azerbaijan during the November 16 border clashes.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 16, armed clashes broke out on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. Azerbaijan reported the death of seven servicemen and about 10 wounded persons; Armenia reported one casualty. According to the Armenian Ministry of Defence (MoD), 13 soldiers became POWs; 24 others are still missing. On November 26, Azerbaijan handed one of the POWs over to Armenia.

Artak Zeinalyan, who is representing Armenian POWs' interests, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the ECtHR has satisfied the application of the human rights group on the case of capturing four Armenian servicemen by Azerbaijan on November 16.

Mr Zeinalyan has noted that the rights defenders' application demands "to ensure, in accordance with the European Convention on Human Rights (RCHR), the fundamental rights of the Armenian POWs (the right to life and health and the exclusion of torture), captured during the military aggression by Azerbaijan on the sovereign territory of Armenia."
