Case on Basaev’s raid on Dagestan
The Southern District Military Court sentenced Shamil Umakhanov to 25 years of imprisonment on the charge of attempting to kill law enforcers during the Basaev’s raid on Dagestan. Since 2004, Shamil Umakhanov, a native of Makhachkala, has been serving his 24-year sentence in a case on banditry and participation in illegal armed formations (IAFs). Thus, taking into account the partial addition to the previously imposed punishment, Shamil Umakhanov got another year of imprisonment in a high-security penal colony.
Shamil Umakhanov, a young confectioner from Makhachkala, came to Chechnya after the militants’ victory in the first military campaign. The man was trained in a militant camp near Urus-Martan, and by the beginning of the second military operation he was already a commander of his own “Badr” detachment, named after one of the heroes of the Muslim epic. Shamil Umakhanov confessed to the crime.
