Native of Egypt accuses Kuban law enforcers of illegal criminal prosecution

Karim Fuad and his wife, Anastasia Marchenko, has complained to the Russia's General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) about actions of law enforcers, who had falsified two criminal cases against Fuad, planted drugs and damaged property during a search of their house located in the Zelenchuk farmstead of the Gulkevichi District in the Krasnodar Territory (also known as Kuban by the name of the major river). In the complainants' opinion, the criminal prosecution has a xenophobic background.

"For more than five years, I've been married to a native of Egypt, who this year received Russian citizenship; and we moved with him from Moscow to the Gulkevichi District of the Krasnodar Territory. The district authorities met us with hostility. A large role in this was played by the dark skin, dark hair and brown eyes of my husband. We repeatedly faced disdainful attitude and insults based on racism, "Anastasia Marchenko told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to Karim Fuad, on November 9, law enforcers broke into their house, planted drugs during a search and detained him.

"I was kept in a cold cell for 24 hours without water and food. They forced me to sign some papers, and I signed, not knowing what, because I couldn't think anything at all because of cold and hunger. I asked for an interpreter, because I didn't understand at all what I was signing. But they told me: 'Sit still, you'll cope without that'," Mr Fuad has stated.

Later, the investigator told him that he was accused of drug possession and that he had threatened court marshals.

On December 19, Fuad and Marchenko turned to the GPO of the Russian Federation with a complaint against law enforcers because of "racism, falsification of two criminal cases against Karim Fuad, groundless intrusion of armed masked people into the home, who damaged their property and planted drugs" (a copy of the application is at the disposal of the "Caucasian Knot").
