Azerbaijani blogger Djamil Mamedli sentenced to 1.5 years of corrective labour
After considering the complaint, lodged by Ziyaddin Aliev, the head of the executive power of the Guba District, an Azerbaijani court found Djamil Mamedli, a blogger and a journalist, guilty of libel and sentenced him to one and a half years of corrective labour. The journalist rejected the accusation and intends to appeal against it at the court of appeal.
"A year ago, Ziyaddin Aliev filed a complaint against me because I used to cover social problems of our district on my YouTube channel," Djamil Mamedli told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
In the video, Djamil Mamedli claims that the head of the executive power of the Guba District had embezzled the funds allocated from the state budget to support employment to low-income citizens.
He has noted that the prosecutor's office is investigating the facts he had disclosed. "I asked the court to at least wait for the completion of the investigation and then make its ruling, but in vain," Mamedli said.
According to his story, the court sentenced him to 1.5 years of corrective labour, finding him guilty under Article 147.2 (slander about committing a grave or especially grave crime) of the Criminal Code.
"We'll file a complaint against the verdict, as it was a customized one. I hope the court of appeal will cancel this absurd ruling," Djamil Mamedli has stated.
