Residents of Vladikavkaz assess consequences of South Ossetia's joining Russia
It is high time for South Ossetia to join Russia, as this will increase residents' security and improve their living conditions. However, in economic terms, this will entail the loss of possible benefits of the republic's statehood, residents of Vladikavkaz have noted.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Anatoly Bibilov, President of South Ossetia, proposed holding a referendum on joining Russia, and also announced the need for unification with North Ossetia. According to analysts, Bibilov's statement is just a promotion step made within the framework of the presidential election race.
South Ossetia will not be able to defend itself without Russia, Oleg Biboev, a lawyer, has pointed out.
Alan Gusalov, an economist, is against South Ossetia's joining Russia. "In the modern world, losing one's statehood, in my opinion, is not worth it," he believes.
Earlier, analysts recalled that the initiative of joining Russia was voiced out by Bibilov at the 2017 election and helped him win it.
The presidential election in South Ossetia is scheduled for April 10.
