One year since Commissioner for Human Rights has been working in Stavropol region
In July one year passed since the institution of ombudsman had been established in the Stavropol region. On July 25, 2002 the State Duma of the Stavropol region appointed A. Selyukov Commissioner for Human Rights in the region. The Stavropol region became the twentieth subject of the Russian Federation where such an institution was established.
480 written and 364 spoken addresses to the Commissioner for Human Rights were registered in the first six months of the 2003. About 15% of all addresses are satisfied.
Along with examination of people?s addresses the work at teaching and popularization of human rights, cultivation of human rights culture among the population is carried out. Commissioner?s public waiting-room functions on the basis of the juridical clinic of the Stavropol State University.
To raise the effectiveness of Commissioner?s work on observance of human rights and freedoms Commissioner?s representative offices are being created in towns and territories of the region.
