Georgia: activists urged to protect women from violence

On May 22, the cities of Tbilisi, Zugdidi and Batumi hosted actions in defence of women's right to life. Activists urged the society not to ignore violence against women.

The actions were organized by the NGOs "Georgia's Cognitive Centre" and "Femina", and the Women's Association "Gvirila" (Chamomile).

"On May 21, in public transport, a husband killed his wife in front of their children. We are extremely shocked by this tragic fact. We are against the brutal series of women's murders and are gathering in three different cities of Georgia: Tbilisi, Batumi and Zugdidi," the organizers of the actions have stated.

"The yesterday's incident shows the society's indifference, because it happened not in a closed room, behind the door, but in public transport; and the society did nothing to prevent the tragedy," the "Netgazeti.ge" quotes Nino Baisonashvili, the head of the "Femina", as saying.

In its Facebook page, the "Georgia's Cognitive Centre" has posted information and photo reports about the above actions. The photos show that about two dozen women and several men took part in each of the actions.
