Court refuses to suspend liquidation of "Memorial"*

The Moscow City Court (MCC) has failed to satisfy the motion to suspend the liquidation of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial"* until the decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) on the complaint against the law on foreign agents.

The MCC's decision was predictable, said Grigory Vaipan, a lawyer.

"What we saw today at the MCC is not only disrespect for the ECtHR, but also disrespect for the Russian court, about which the Ministry of Justice, the General Prosecutor's Office and even the Federal Tax Service wiped their feet," he has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 5, the Moscow appellate instance upheld the decision to liquidate the HRC "Memorial". The Centre is starting the liquidation process, but its lawyers will continue to work on complaints sent to the ECtHR that have already been filed, human rights defenders have informed. On May 18, the "Memorial" was excluded from the Unified State Register of Legal Entities until the end of liquidation, which created difficulties in paying off debts.

On December 29, 2021, the MCC ruled to liquidate the HRC "Memorial". The liquidation lawsuit was filed by the Moscow Prosecutor's Office, which claimed that the "Memorial"* was justifying extremism and terrorism.
