Power experts promise to restore electricity supply to protesting Makhachkala residents

The reason for the mass power blackouts in Makhachkala was the increased electricity consumption because of heat and the use of air conditioning systems, the head of the "Dagenergo" Company, who came to the protesters in the Reduktorny neighbourhood of Makhachkala, and promised to restore the power supply this evening.

On July 18, several hundred people blocked the traffic in the Reduktorny in protest against the frequent blackouts. Policemen, standing in a chain, liberated the roadway for the passage of vehicles; one of the protesters was detained and put into a police car. About ten women repeatedly tried to block the motor traffic, but the police forced them to the side of the road.

At about 8 p.m. Moscow time, Alibulat Magomedov, a Deputy Makhachkala Mayor, and Magomed Khanapiev, the head of the "Rosseti Northern Caucasus-Dagenergo" came to meet the crowd.

As Mr Khanapiev has explained, the outages occur due to exceeding the capacity of the equipment. The reason is in increased power consumption in the hot weather and extensive use of air conditioning systems, he said.

According to his story, all repairs will be completed during this evening and the electricity supply will be restored.

Local residents told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the power outages have occurred for five days already.
