Law enforcer arrested in Kuban within the case of detainee's death

In Krasnodar, a police officer has become a suspect in the case of the death of Ilya Afrosin, who complained of torture after detention, human rights defenders have informed.

In Kuban (the Krasnodar Territory) and in Russia as a whole, torture has become a "common occurrence" among law enforcers, while Kuban is one of the most disadvantaged regions in this regard, human rights defenders stated in 2021.

Yuri Afrosin, a resident of Krasnodar, said that his son Ilya, born in 1989, was twice detained by law enforcers. On June 29, 2021, after his first detention, Ilya Afrosin sent his sister a video with traces of traumas; and after the second detention, on July 1, 2021, he stopped contacting his relatives, according to the website of the Team Against Torture (TAT).

Ilya Afrosin was found on the steps of a store; he died in an ambulance. The father of the deceased handed over two videos to TAT lawyers. On one of them, Ilya shows traces of torture and reports on law enforcers' "illegal actions."

Let us remind you that on December 28, 2021, the Kuban Prosecutor's Office announced the start of a criminal investigation in connection with the deathbed statement about torture from Sochi resident Evgeny Ipatov, who was found dead. In the video, he claimed that he had been tortured by law enforcers, who demanded to slander himself and confess to stealing money from pensioners.
