Life-sentenced Chechen native Mansur Razhaev awarded compensation for violation of his rights

In Pyatigorsk, the Fifth Court of Cassation sided with Mansur Razhaev, a native of Chechnya, sentenced to life imprisonment in a case on involvement in militant groupings, in his dispute with a penal colony and awarded him compensation for violation of the conditions of his detention.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on January 31, 2012, the Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan sentenced Mansur Razhaev to life imprisonment, recognizing him as a member of an illegal armed formation (IAF), which members killed six soldiers of the Russian internal troops on the outskirts of the village of Tukhchara in the Novolaksky District of Dagestan in September 1999.

On February 3, 2020, Mansur Razhaev asked the administration of the penal colony to give him the materials of his personal file so that he could look through them. However, the convict was only given the first volume of his case. Mansur Razhaev considered those actions of the penal colony administration to be unreasonable and indicated that they prevented him from filing a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), which violated his rights.
