Lawyer: relatives have right to seek investigation into circumstances of Berezikov’s death
Activist Anatoly Berezikov, who died in a SIZO (pre-trial prison) in Rostov-on-Don, was buried by his relatives. Investigators instituted a case on incitement to suicide. The relatives of Anatoly Berezikov have the right to request holding an investigation into the circumstances of his death, lawyer Galina Tarasova points out.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that a petition demanding to hold an investigation into the Anatoly Berezikov’s death posted on the “Change.Org” website gained more than 2200 votes within five days. Activists raised more than 500,000 roubles for the Anatoly Berezikov’s funeral and help for his mother.
Anatoly Berezikov died in the SIZO, where he was serving his third arrest in a row after taking part in a pacifist action. According to the advocate, her client complained about being tortured by law enforcers. Anatoly Berezikov participated in protest actions. Advocate Yevgeny Smirnov believes that the law enforcement bodies of Rostov-on-Don carried out a series of arrests in order to coordinate the institution of a criminal case under the article on high treason.
It follows from the ruling that Anatoly Berezikov committed suicide in the cell where he was serving his arrest.
The relatives have the right to file a complaint to investigate the circumstances of Anatoly Berezikov’s death, emphasizes lawyer Galina Tarasova.
A friend of Anatoly Berezikov noted that he was mainly interested in music, not politics.
