Public prosecutors fail to present evidence of defendants’ guilt in case on riots at Makhachkala airport

The case on the riots at an airport in Makhachkala should be further investigated, since at the next trial, public prosecutors presented evidence of defendants’ guilt with general wording, without examining the guilt and actions of each of the defendants. The above opinion has been voiced by advocates.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in November, the Sovietsky District Court of the Stavropol Territory began to consider another case on riots in Makhachkala, which involved five defendants accused of participating in the mass riots and violating transport security requirements. The prisoners’ dock contained Zainalabid Cheriev, Islam Umarov, Abdulamid Magomedov, Ibragim Shakhmanov, and Yusup Rabadanov.

Djuma Magomedova, an advocate, who defends Yusup Rabadanov, has emphasized that her client admits he entered the airport building, but has not committed anything illegal.

“He was driving to Makhachkala to visit his grandmother, who stayed in the hospital, got stuck in a traffic jam, saw people going somewhere, and went to see where they were going. There is a video of him staying at the airport building, but there is no evidence of his illegal actions,” the advocate stated.

A source close to the defence of one of the defendants has claimed that the case should be sent for further investigation.

“The charges are very vague. They describe the general circumstances of those events, but do not indicate what exactly this or that person is guilty of. They invented a new term of ‘acting as part of a crowd.’ But this term is not of legal practice, but of everyday people’s slang. There is no evidence of prior conspiracy,” the source explained.

Let us remind you that on December 20, it became known that the Izobilnensky District Court in the Stavropol Territory found five residents of Dagestan guilty in the case on riots at the Makhachkala airport and sentenced them to imprisonment for terms ranging from 8 years 6 months to 8 years 8 months.

Relatives of those accused and convicted in the case on the riots at the Makhachkala airport intended to ask for help from Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, but they did not succeed in getting an appointment with him. At a meeting with the Dagestani Ombudsperson, the relatives wrote a letter to Dagestani leader Sergey Melikov and threatened to hold protest actions if they received no response. However, there was no response from the authorities of Dagestan.
