Court tightens sentence of Dagestani native Magomed Atimagomedov in case on attack on warders

Magomed Atimagomedov, a native of Dagestan, convicted in a case on attacking warders from a Kalmyk penal colony and killing one of them, has his 25-year sentence replaced with life imprisonment.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in February, the Supreme Court (SC) of Kalmykia found Magomed Atimagomedov and Daud Kuramagomedov guilty of attempting to escape, murder, and attempted murder, and disorganizing the operation of the penal colony. Magomed Atimagomedov was sentenced to 25 years, and Daud Kuramagomedov – to life imprisonment.

In the summer of 2022, the prisoners were accused of attacking prison staff. Later, a criminal case was also instituted against the prisoners for calling for mass riots. Advocates claim that their clients were severely beaten in the penal colony. Magomed Atimagomedov said that he planned to escape because he was threatened with terrorism charges, although he was not involved in the murder.

The “Caucasian Knot” has also reported that five warders from the Kalmyk penal colony were arrested on suspicion of using violence against prisoners. Beaten convicts from Dagestan said that they were tortured by about 40 people. In March 2023, the Magomed Atimagomedov’s defence managed to achieve the institution of a second criminal case on torture against Baatar Bakanov and Arman Sagipov, two penal colony employees.
