Military man from Adygea sentenced for desertion
A court sentenced Vitaly Yanchenko, a contract soldier from Adygea, to six years of imprisonment in a high-security penal colony, finding him guilty of desertion from a military unit in Buynaksk.
The verdict released on the official website of the Maykop Garrison Military Court states that Vitaly Yanchenko failed to appear on time at the military unit on April 26, 2023, “and spent time at his own discretion in the city of Buynaksk in the Republic of Dagestan and Adygeisk in the Republic of Adygea until November 30, 2023.” The man’s location was established by a military commandant’s office.
Vitaly Yanchenko said that he began to feel burdened by the responsibilities of military service and understood that he no longer wanted to undergo it, as he feared for his life and health after being wounded.
The court took into account that Vitaly Yanchenko participated in a counter-terrorist operation (CTO) in Northern Caucasus and the special military operation (SMO), was wounded, received a state award, and was diagnosed with a mental disorder.
