After being beaten by law enforcers, resident of North Ossetia achieves case initiation

Eight months later, investigators in Moscow have opened a criminal case into the beating of Tamerlan Marzoev, a North-Ossetian native, by law enforcers.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in the fall of 2023, after being beaten, Marzoev was hospitalized with fractures and bruises, but investigators refused to open a criminal case. In December 2023, Marzoev’s application was sent for a new check.

The incident occurred when Marzoev and his wife were returning home. According to Tamerlan, a police car blocked their way, and two law enforcers got out of it, demanded to see his documents, and then began insulting Marzoev and his wife on ethnic grounds. The law enforcers hit Marzoev several times, he fell and hit his head. However, he was taken to the police station, where insults continued.

An employee of the “Team against Torture” (TaT)* has noted that by initiating a case, the state has recognized the fact of a crime committed by law enforcers against Marzoev.

“The extremely long check period indicates that the case has not been settled; the victim will have to continue actively defending his interests so that the perpetrators are punished,” Georgy Ivanov, the TaT*'s lawyer, is quoted as stating.

The "Caucasian Knot" has also reported about the case of Soslan Dzidakhanov, who was beaten up by a policeman. The latter was sentenced to four years of conditional imprisonment (probation). Dzidakhanov claimed a million roubles as compensation, but the court reduced this amount to 200,000 roubles.

*The "Team against Torture" (TaT, formerly the "Committee against Torture" – CaT) was created by the lawyers who had earlier worked for the CaT, which was included into the register of the NCOs performing the functions of foreign agents.
