More than 500 people come to rally in Dagestan on anniversary of deportation of Vainakhs
A mourning rally on the 81st anniversary of the Stalin era deportation of the Vainakhs was held in the Novolaksky District of Dagestan.
A mourning rally in memory of the victims of the deportation was held in Ingushetia, and at a rally in Chechnya, Chechen Prime Minister Magomed Daudov demanded that the housing in the former Aukhovsky District of Dagestan should be returned to descendants of the repressed people.
The Aukhovsky District, where the Chechens-Akkints lived, was liquidated in 1944 after the deportation of the Chechen and Ingush people. On part of this territory, the Novolaksky District was formed and populated by Laks, and another part was transferred to the Kazbekovsky District and populated by Avars.
After the rally, sermons and prayers were read, including for the victims of deportation and those who perished during World War II.
The restoration of the Aukhovsky District, which was planned to be completed by 2025, has actually been stopped for many years, and the resettlement of the Laks and the construction of new houses have been disrupted, Dagestani activists claimed in 2024.
In 2023, the authorities recommended that organizers of memorial events for the anniversary of the deportation in the Novolaksky District should not discuss political topics and problems of the Aukhovsky District at rallies.
