Azerbaijani MFA criticizes Vladimir Medinsky’s statement
Vladimir Medinsky, the aide to the President of the Russian Federation, has called Nagorno-Karabakh a disputed region between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The official Baku accused Vladimir Medinsky of distorting the facts.
On June 9, in an interview with the “Russia Today” publication, Russian presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky claimed that stopping the conflict between Russia and Ukraine “along the front line and not agreeing on real peace, just concluding some kind of truce, will mean … You know, there was a disputed region between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Karabakh. Then this region will turn into a huge Karabakh.”
Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry press secretary Aykhan Hajizada has commented on the statement by Vladimir Medinsky, stating that Karabakh has never been a disputed territory. “We remind you that Karabakh is an original Azerbaijani land. Moreover, Russia itself recognizes and has always recognized Karabakh as part of the territory of Azerbaijan,” stated Aykhan Hajizada as quotes by the “Oxu.az” portal.
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry press secretary has expressed his bewilderment that Vladimir Medinsky, being the aide to the President of the Russian Federation, the country, which was previously a co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, “does not understand or does not want to understand the official position of his state on the issue.”
In addition, the press secretary for the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry (MFA) considers it “incorrect and inappropriate” to compare the conflict between Russia and Ukraine with the situation in Karabakh, since “Azerbaijan has never violated the territorial integrity of any country.”
“We recommend that Mr. Medinsky refrain from making erroneous and inaccurate statements on issues that are not within his competence, so as not to damage interstate relations,” the statement of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs summarizes.
