Karapetyan's defence challenges his arrest

A complaint has been filed with the Court of Appeal against the arrest of the businessman, Samvel Karapetyan, in Armenia. Russia has declared its readiness to provide him with support as a Russian citizen.

A complaint has been submitted to the Criminal Court of Appeal against the ruling to arrest Samvel Karapetyan, his advocate, Ruben Akopyan, told the “NEWS.am” outlet.

"The accusation has nothing to do with the Criminal Code and the criminal law," Karapetyan's defence has stated. According to the indictment, the statement in support of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church is a "public call to seize power"; it confirms the presence of international standards of political persecution in this case. "The advocacy group has also appealed against the obviously illegal decisions to search and detain Samvel Karapetyan," the “Aysor” outlet has quoted the defence as stating.

Russia declares its readiness to provide support to Karapetyan.

The Kremlin is closely monitoring the situation with the arrest in Armenia of Samvel Karapetyan, the head of the “Tashir” Group of Companies; it will be ready to provide him with all the necessary assistance, Dmitry Peskov, the Russian presidential press secretary, has stated today.

"If necessary, of course, Russia will be ready to provide all the necessary assistance to Samvel Karapetyan," Mr Peskov has added.

"Of course, we are tracing the case. For us, he is a Russian citizen. We don’t want to interfere in Armenia’s internal affairs, but we, of course, are closely monitoring everything related to the Russian citizen," the TASS has quoted him as saying.

Earlier, Maria Zakharova, the official speaker of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), also stated this.

"A Russian citizen who has Russian citizenship, a Russian entrepreneur, like any other Russian citizen and Russian entrepreneur, always receives help and support if he turns to our embassy, to the Russian side, he, his advocates or relatives," the TASS has quoted her as saying on June 19.

On June 18, Ararat Mirzoyan, the head of the Armenian MFA, stated that Yerevan had submitted an official note to the Russian MFA for gross interference in Armenia's internal affairs and encroachment on its sovereignty and democracy, since unacceptable calls were made by the Russian side due to the legal process against Samvel Karapetyan, the “Armenia Today” outlet has reported. Besides, personal insults were made against the Armenian leadership. "Unacceptable calls, distorted assessments and personal insults were made on the Russian TV, including against the Armenian leadership. Immediately after this, similar statements were made by Russian politicians-MPs and members of the majority in the government," Mr Mirzoyan has stated.
