Authorities' announcements about water supply surprised residents of Tyrnyauz

The water supply to the homes of residents of Tyrnyauz, which was disrupted after a mudflow, has been restored under a temporary scheme, but new water outages are possible, the authorities said. There was no water supply to homes, the townspeople objected.

The authorities announced the evacuation of residents of several microdistricts. By August 2, due to the risk of a repeat mudflow, about 1,000 people were evacuated. By this date, about 3,000 residents of the city remained without water supply.

Today, there is no mudflow on the Gerkhozhan-Suu River in Tyrnyauz, but the threat of an avalanche remains. Road services are clearing roads of mudflow deposits, the Kabardino-Balkarian Emergencies Ministry reported on its Telegram channel. "Water supply has been restored under a temporary scheme. Electricity and gas supply are operating as usual," the publication says.

Traffic is open on the bypass road through the territory of the Gipsolit plant only from the Elbrus region, the department noted.

The city administration reported last night that the installation of the pipeline to Verkhniy Gerkhozhan has been completed. "Due to the fact that the threat of new mudflows has not passed, we extended the pipeline much higher than the previous level. This scheme entailed the installation of new pumping equipment in emergency mode. It was also possible to supply power to Nizhny Gerkhozhan. However, the scheme is temporary, the water flow rate will not be enough to achieve the standard result today," the publication on the city hall's Telegram channel says.

Nizhny Gerkhozhan, outages are also possible during the day

This afternoon, the city hall reposted the publication of the Ministry of Emergency Situations about the resumption of water supply under a temporary scheme, but then posted a publication of the MUP "Kommunalnik" on its Telegram channel. "Dear residents of Verkhniy Gerkhozhan. Please fill up with water. They will turn it off to continue the work that was not completed yesterday. Nizhniy Gerkhozhan, there may also be outages during the day," it says.

At 12:21 and 12:22 Moscow time, the Tyrnyauz administration made two of its own announcements. "Two Gazelles with water have arrived at the mosque, please come," the first one says. "We will tentatively start the water supply to Nizhniy Gerkhozhan today," the second one says.

As of 1:55 p.m. Moscow time, there are no comments under the post about the water trucks, while several comments have been made under the other announcement. "There has been no water in Nizhniy Gerkhozhan since the first days and until today," Ais said. "When will they give it to you? Rescuers warn of mudflow danger near Tyrnyauz

Recall that seven years ago, in 2018, geophysicists indicated to the authorities the need for urgent repairs to the mudflow channel and the organization of a warning system for residents of Tyrnyauz about the threat of mudflows.

In 2020, geophysicists examined the Buzulgan landslide, which moved 20 meters in two weeks, ending up two kilometers from Tyrnyauz. "In order to avoid catastrophic consequences from mudflows with a possible increased volume of removal in the future, it is necessary to clear the mudflow channel from deposits of previous mudflows and reconstruct it," the High-Mountain Geophysical Institute said at the time.
