Ombudsman of Georgia: authorities continue prosecuting participants of the November 7 action

The National Defender of Georgia has stated that the authorities of Georgia continue prosecuting and repressing the participants of the action of the United Opposition on November 7.

The press release issued by the machinery of the Georgian Ombudsman and disseminated today runs that after November 7 the National Defender's staff has studied quite a lot of cases that confirm these facts, the IA "News-Georgia" reports.

Ombudsman Sozar Subari has expresses his concern that after severe dispersal of the peaceful demonstration on November 7, the authorities continue terrorizing and prosecuting the dissidents and members of opposition parties, activists of civil society and ordinary citizens who took part in the actions.

Among the cases studied by the Ombudsman, there were numerous facts of illegal violent treatment of the people who had been detained on the day of dispersing the action on November 7 and on the following day. All of them were detained only because they had been noticed at the action. The measures undertaken by the members of law enforcement bodies were notable for special cruelty, the Ombudsman's press release runs.

Mr Subari calls on the Georgian authorities to immediately restore the broadcasting of those radio and television companies who had been stopped illegally, as he thinks. It refers the "Imedi" Radio and TV Company, the "Kavkasia" TV Company and the Batumi's "25th Channel."

It is necessary to note here that the state of emergency will be cancelled in Georgia on November 16, 2007. Nino Burdzhanadze, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, has announced it today on air of the Public Television.
