Relatives of persons kidnapped in Dagestan accuse prosecutor's office of nonfeasance

Relatives of the people kidnapped in Dagestan and the members of the Movement "Dagestan Mothers" suspect the workers of law enforcement bodies of involvement in kidnapping and accuse the prosecutor's office of inaction.

Gulnara Rustamova, one of leaders of the Movement, fears that Dzhabir Kamalutdinov and Shamil Omarov, who were kidnapped late in January in Makhachkala and released a week later, can be kidnapped again.

According to Ms Rustamova, "they are still prosecuted by the workers of 'Department 6' and receive telephone calls and threats. Young people are kidnapped by the workers of law enforcement bodies only on suspicion of religious views, non-traditional for Dagestan."

Meanwhile, certain details of Kamalutdinov's and Omarov's kidnappings have become known. They told themselves to representatives of Dagestan mass media that law enforcement bodies had something to do with their kidnapping.

According to Mr Kamalutdinov, on January 30 in the evening he was taking a taxi, and at that moment armed people jumped out of a black car model VAZ-21099 without a number plate and forced him out of the taxi into their car:

"The kidnappers, who did not present themselves, demanded that I name the persons involved in the Wahhabite underground movement, and, in particular, asked about Shamil Gasanov, leader of the 'Makhachkala Jama'at', and my ties with him."

Two days later, Kamalutdinov and his friend Shamil Omarov, who was kidnapped near his house a day after Kamalutdinov, were transported, as they say, to Chechnya, where they were tortured.

On the fifth day of detention, both kidnapped men were brought back to Dagestan. In the opinion of Dzhabir Kamalutdinov, they were released after the kidnappers had understood that they were not involved in any crimes, and after the publicity that this case had received at the very top level.

Gulnara Rustamova, who is representing the Movement "Mothers of Dagestan", asserts that there are witnesses who can name the workers of law enforcement bodies who took part in the above kidnappings.
