Russian foreign ministry: no analogy between situation in Chechnya and abuse of captive Iraqis
"We regularly explain on all levels and to the United States as well what processes of political settlement are being carried out in Chechnya," Aleksandr Yakovenko, a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said at a press conference on Tuesday, May 27. It is incorrect to draw an analogy between the situation in Chechnya and the abuse of captive Iraqis by US soldiers in the Abu Ghraib prison, he stressed. Mr Yakovenko reminded that a month ago, the UN Commission on Human Rights had rejected the European Union's draft resolution which laid strictures on the stance of Russia on Chechnya. Russia is ready to explain the real situation in Chechnya to all interested countries and organizations and "is doing it patiently," the Foreign Ministry's spokesman said.
