Bomb blasts claim 11 lives in 2004

The detonation of twelve bombs and other pieces of ammunition has resulted in eleven people dying and twelve wounded this year. This is what a press-release of ANAMA, Azerbaijan's agency for the mine-clearance of territories, says. The same source indicates three cases of injuries because of bomb blasts were registered in June. Thus, a truck ran over an antitank mine in the Terter district on June 1, which resulted in one person injured; one serviceman was wounded as a result of the detonation of an antipersonnel mine in Gapanly, Terter district, on June 11; a harvester ran over an antitank mine in Alkhanly, Fizuli district, on June 26, which led to one person injured.

Fifty blasts have led to thirty-six people dying and another forty-seven sustaining various wounds since September 2001, the same source says. ANAMA personnel cleared an area of 632,726 square meters in June this year. In doing so, they discovered and destroyed 14 pieces of ammunition. In all, ANAMA has cleared an area of 9,275,352 square meters. In doing so, 5,992 intact pieces of ammunition were discovered and destroyed, the press-release says.
