Armenian activists argue against PACE resolutions on Nagorno-Karabakh

On January 25, members of the civil movement "In the name of the law" held a protest action in front of the British Embassy in Yerevan. They demanded to cancel the discussion of the draft resolutions on Nagorno-Karabakh.

On January 26, in Strasbourg, at the winter session, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) is to hold the voting concerning the resolution on the reports "Increase of violence in Nagorno-Karabakh and other occupied territories of Azerbaijan" and "Near-border residents of Azerbaijan are deliberately deprived of water" (about the Sarsang Reservoir). The first report has been prepared by Robert Walter, an MP from the UK, and the second by Milica Markovic, an MP from Bosnia and Herzegovina. NGOs of Nagorno-Karabakh have stated that the reports are of pro-Azerbaijani character.

Participants of the protest action have handed over a letter to Amias Moores, British Deputy Ambassador in Armenia. In their letter, the protestors demanded to cancel the discussion of the resolutions on Nagorno-Karabakh in the PACE. Furthermore, they left jars with caviar at the doors of the British Embassy as "a sign that the PACE MPs were bribed."

According to the activists, the British MP has no right to interfere in the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.

After the protest action, the British Embassy has stated that it "welcomes the progress in the activity of the OSCE Minsk Group, as well as support of the Council of Europe in these activities." The UK has mentioned the deterioration of the situation at the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and called on the parties to "act within the process aimed at the peaceful settlement of the conflict."
