Former Armenian defense minister to stay in custody
A Yerevan trial court made a decision the other day to prolong the detention term for Vagarshak Arutyunian, a member of the political council of the Republic party and the former Armenian defense minister. Vagarshak Arutyunian was arrested on the night of April 12-13, when interior troops used force to disperse a demonstration on Bagramian Avenue in Yerevan. The former defense minister is charged under three articles of the Criminal Code: with making public appeals to appropriate state power, insulting a state official, and appropriating state power. The last article stipulates from 10 to 15 years of imprisonment.
