"The Apprentice" by Kirill Serebrennikov causes rush at "Kinotavr" Festival

The "Kinotavr" Film Festival in Sochi has screened the film "The Apprentice" directed by Kirill Serebrennikov. The event caused an unprecedented rush among the participants and guests of the festival, having brought together the largest number of viewers for all the days of the festival.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 6 Sochi opened the 27th "Kinotavr" Film Festival, held annually since 1991.

The hall was packed when the Serebrennikov's film was screened. Only the accredited public, as well as guests by invitation tickets could get there.

In May, "The Apprentice" took part in the parallel programme "Special Viewpoint" at the Cannes Film Festival in France and was awarded the prize of François Chalet – a well-known French journalist and writer.

The movie is filmed according the play by the German playwright Marius von Mayenburg "Martyr". The main hero is a high school pupil student Veniamin, who reads the Bible at school and at home, and condemns everybody, whose actions, in his judgements, contradict the Holy Scriptures. Gradually, he becomes a religious fanatic. His only friend is his classmate Grisha – an invalid and a latent homosexual. They are confronted by the female biology teacher, who tells them about the world in terms of science.

Let us note here that in 2015 the Main Prize of the "Kinotavr" Festival went to the film "About Love" by Anna Melikyan, a film director of Armenian origin.
