Azerbaijan parliament discusses cancellation of NATO's maneuvers

The cancellation of NATO's Cooperative Best Effort 2004 maneuvers in Azerbaijan was discussed at the session of Milli Majlis [the parliament of Azerbaijan] yesterday, September 14.
Gudrat Gasanguliyev, the leader of the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, called the occurrence "a great achievement". "The people showed their unity," he said with satisfaction. Mr Gasanguliyev urged to be "watchful" towards people and companies maintaining contact with the Armenians and pointed to the inadmissibility of such cooperation.

At the same time, Deputy Musa Musayev voiced doubt about positive results of the frustration of NATO's maneuvers. He reminded of great efforts made by Azerbaijan in its time to become an associate member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. If Azerbaijan aims at resolving the Karabakh problem by peaceful means, it should cooperate with NATO, Mr Musayev said.

Summing up the debates, Speaker Murtuz Aleskerov said: "We protested against the arrival of servicemen who occupied our lands and shed our people's blood and secured our object."
