Astrakhan policemen suspected of forcing detainee to confess of crime

In the Astrakhan Region, a district police inspector and a field investigator of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) for the Volodarsky District are suspected of abuse of power with the use of special means and infliction of serious consequences.

According to the investigators, in May 2016, the suspects came to the working place of a local resident and under the pretext of medical examination for drug use brought him to the police station. There, they started to force him to confess to the commitment of a particularly serious crime.

The policemen planted to a pocket of the victim a parcel with the alleged narcotic substance. They threatened the detainee to institute criminal proceedings against him on the fact of possession of drugs. Besides, the victim was threatened with the use of physical force against him and criminal prosecution of his relatives. The victim was forced under pressure to confess to a robbery. He wrote a confession as dictated by the suspected policemen. This was reported on July 8 by the website of the Investigating Department for the Astrakhan Region of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF).

The suspects were taken in custody as a pre-trial restriction measure.
