Film on earthquake in Gyumri nominated for Oscar

Film "The earthquake" directed by Sarik Andreasyan has been nominated from Armenia for Oscar award in the category "Best Foreign Language Film". The decision was made by nine out of 24 members of the Armenian Film Academy.

The earthquake, which was named "Spitak earthquake", took place in Armenia on December 7, 1988. 25,000 people fell victim to the tragedy, and 500,000 others lost their houses.

The Armenian Film Academy has received three applications for nomination from Armenia for the 89th American film award "Oscar". On September 3, by secret voting, the members of the Armenian Film Academy chose a film to be nominated for Oscar, the "Panorama.am" reports with reference to Raffi Movsisyan, the secretary of the Armenian Film Academy.

According to the "Panorama.am", the members of the Armenian Film Academy were asked to choose between three films, including "The last resident" directed by Djivan Avetisyan, "Local time 28:94" directed by David Safaryan, and "The earthquake" directed by Sarik Andreasyan.

The budget of "The earthquake", a project of the company "Mars Media Entertainment", is 200 million roubles, and the first run of the film in Russia is scheduled for December 1, the website "Kinopoisk" reports. According to the project, the film described "the story of two characters 45-year-old Konstantin Berezhnoy and 20-year-old Robert Melkonyan against the background of the natural disaster."
