Prosecutor demands to hold Varvara Karaulova's trial behind closed doors

The court hearing in the case against Alexandra Ivanova (Varvara Karaulova) should be held behind closed doors, since the case materials contain confidential information. This was stated by the public prosecutor. The advocate has asked the court to dismiss the prosecutor's motion, since only one of the case materials contains the confidential information.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 16, it became known that the case with the indictment was sent to the Moscow District Military Court.

On June 4, 2015, Varvara Karaulova, a student of the Moscow State University (MSU), was detained at the Turkish-Syrian border with a group of Russian citizens, including natives of Chechnya and Dagestan, and citizens of Azerbaijan. According to investigators, the suspects intended to join the terrorist organization "Islamic State" (IS), banned in Russia. The criminal case got wide response, and then Varvara Karaulova changed her name and became Alexandra Ivanova. During the preliminary investigation, she pleaded guilty; however, later, she retracted her confession.

The "TASS" reports that Alexandra Ivanova and her defender Sergey Badamshin asked the court to hold hearings in the case as open.

According to Sergey Badamshin, if there is a need to close some data, then it can also be done at an open court hearing, the "Interfax" reports.

  • Compensation decrease for illegal prosecution violates rights of KBR resident

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer.
