117 international observers accredited for referendum in Azerbaijan

117 international observers from 35 countries throughout the world have been accredited to monitor the constitutional referendum held in the territory of the Azerbaijan. This has been reported today by Mazakhir Panakhov, the chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Azerbaijan.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the referendum on amendments to the Constitution of Azerbaijan is scheduled for September 26. The constitutional amendments are initiated by President Ilham Aliev. Apart from other points, the amendments suggest increasing the term of office of the President from five up to seven years and entitling him to dissolve parliament and declare a special presidential election. The amendments lift the minimum age requirement for a candidate for the presidency.

At the voting in Azerbaijan, observers will represent the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) and other international organizations.

"From the number of citizens of Azerbaijan, the referendum will be watched by members of political parties, solo observers, and representatives of registered campaign groups. In total, the number of observers exceeds 53,000 people," reports Mazakhir Panakhov as quoted today by the news agency "Trend".

According to Mazakhir Panakhov, journalists from 17 countries are invited to work at the referendum.
