Users of social networks dissatisfied with improvement of monument to Makhach Dakhadaev in Makhachkala

The monument to Bolshevik Makhach Dakhadaev, after whom the capital of Dagestan had been named, was painted with gold and planted with flowers. Users of social networks have called the initiative for the improvement of the monument inappropriate and raised the issue of renaming of Makhachkala.

Magomed-Ali (Makhach) Dakhadaev, a native of the village of Untsukul, was an active participant of the revolutionary events of 1917-18 inDagestan. In early 1918, he organized units of the Red Guard against units of Muslim religious figures and resident of mountainous villages.

Today, the message reporting on criticism about the restoration of the monument to Makhach Dakhadaev has been received by the SMS-service of the "Caucasian Knot". "In Makhachkala, the monument to Makhach Dakhadaev is painted with gold, and users of social networks are not satisfied with that," wrote the author of the SMS-message.

According to user Marat Kurbanov, "monuments to Lenin and all revolutionaries should be demolished and not painted."

Makhach Dakhadaev has a reputation of a revolutionary hero. However, according to participants of the discussion, before he started to support the Bolsheviks, he had been successfully engaged in commerce and during World War I, he used to supply the royal army with weapons manufactured by his dagger plant.

The capital of Dagestan should not be named in honour of Makhach Dakhadaev, wrote a resident of Makhachkala with the nickname Mahdibekleni Ibrahim.

"It would be fair to finally return to the city its true name Andji-Kala," he wrote.
