Nemtsov's murder case: Gubashev reports on giving confession under torture

Today, at the trial, Anzor Gubashev, one of the defendants, accused of the murder of politician Boris Nemtsov, has claimed that during interrogation, law enforcers took all his clothes off, beat him and tortured him with electric current.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 3, the Moscow District Military Court started the consideration of the case on the murder of Boris Nemtsov.

The prisoners' dock contains five defendants, including Zaur Dadaev, brothers Anzor and Shagid Gubashev, Tamerlan Eskerkhanov and Khamzat Bakhaev. The criminal case also involves Chechen officers Ruslan Mukhudinov, Ruslan Geremeev, and Beslan Shavanov, who was killed during his detention.

At the today's court session, Anzor Gubashev reported to the court about the use of torture against him by law enforcers. "Your Honour, the confession was obtained under pressure. They took all my clothes off, beat me and tortured me with electric current. They forced me to say all that. That happened in March 2015," stated the defendant.

Judge Yuri Zhitnikov asked defendant Shadid Gubashev, if illegal methods were used against him. "Yes, they were used. We were not detained, but kidnapped on March 6. A plastic bag was put on my head, and I was taken somewhere," said Shadid Gubashev. However, the Judge interrupted the defendant. The Judge has noted that "detention and illegal methods of investigation are two different things."

  • Compensation decrease for illegal prosecution violates rights of KBR resident

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer. The amount is ridiculous and should be appealed against, lawyers and human rights defenders have stated.
