ECtHR finds violation of rights of Azerbaijani opposition at 2010 elections

Today, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has upheld the appeal filed by Azerbaijani oppositionist Aidyn Shukyurov about violation of his rights during the parliamentary elections held in 2010. The Strasbourg Court has obliged the Azerbaijani authorities to pay Aidyn Shukyurov compensation in the total amount of 11,000 euro.

In 2010, being a member of the "Classic" Popular Front of Azerbaijan (CPFPA) Party, Aidyn Shukurov ran for a seat at the Parliament at the parliamentary elections at the 125th Zangilan-Gubadli electoral district, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

Aidyn Shukyurov has challenged the election results. According to him, mass violations took place, including ballot stuffing, repeated voting, and interference of public officials.

However, the Central Election Commission (CEC) dismissed the appeal filed by Aidyn Shukyurov. Further appeals to the Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) and the Supreme Court (SC) were also not granted.

The ECtHR has concluded that the Aidyn Shukyurov's appeals were not effectively investigated, reports the ECtHR's website. Meanwhile, the Strasbourg Court referred to its earlier case law decisions on Azerbaijan.
