During the week of January 9-15, 2016, seven persons were killed in the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus. No wounded were reported. These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.
The death toll includes a civilian killed in Kabardino-Balkaria, four suspected members of the armed underground in Chechnya, and two law enforcers, also in Chechnya.
Special and counter terrorist operations
On January 11, special units of law enforcers were deployed in the village of Tsotsi-Yurt of the Kurchaloi District of Chechnya. All exits from the village were blocked, and no one was allowed to leave it. Schools, shops, and kindergartens were closed. According to the official information, during the special operation, 21 people were detained in the village of Tsotsi-Yurt. On the outskirts of the village, the police cordoned off a group of militants, and an armed clash occurred. As a result of the shootout, four suspected members of illegal armed formations (IAFs) were killed. Another one was detained, and one more suspect took advantage of the dark time of the day and managed to flee. During the special operation, two soldiers of the Russian Guard were killed, including soldier Khamzat Khashumov, shot dead during the armed clash, and private 1st class Bekhan Khutaev, who died in hospital from the wounds he got during the shootout. The killed people were identified as Umar Ozdiev, born in 1992, and Raibek Idrisov, born 1988, residents of the town of Shali, Alikhan Kupchiev, born in 1984, a native of the village of Germenchuk of the Shali District, and Uzum-Khadji Madaev, born in 1980, a resident of the village of Kurchaloi, who in May 2004 was sentenced to 12.5 years of imprisonment for a number of grave and especially grave crimes. In the morning of January 12, in the Kurchaloi District of Chechnya, units of the law enforcement bodies resumed the special operation to search for an armed militant, who escaped after the armed clash with law enforcers. On January 14, suspected militant Imran Datsaev was detained by law enforcers. Besides, in the city of Nalchik, law enforcers detained other two members of the IAF who tried to flee the region. According to the list of names published by the newspaper "Novaya Gazeta", at least 22 people were detained, and not 21, as it was officially reported. According to local residents, the published list of detainees is far from being complete. Mass detentions took place not only in Tsotsi-Yurt, but also in the villages of Geldagan, Kurchaloi, Mairtup, and Bachi-Yurt of the Kurchaloi District, in the town of Shali, in the village of Germenchuk of the Shali District, and in the town of Argun. The total number of people detained in the past two days has reached about 100.
Attacks on civilians
At about 4:00 p.m. of January 11, 2017, being not far from the entrance gate to the parking lot in Kalyuzhny Street in the city of Nalchik, an unidentified person shot from an automatic weapon at a 43-year resident of the village of Babugent of the Cherek District and then fled the scene. The man got serious wounds and died on the way to hospital. In the course of investigation, law enforcers discovered and seized the submachine gun, from which the man was killed. The law enforcement bodies revealed the involvement in the crime of two persons, including a resident of Nalchik, born in 1968, who had an earlier criminal record, and a resident of Tyrnyauz of the Elbrus District, who had no earlier criminal records. The identification of the third criminal is underway.
Detentions
On January 12, it became known that during a special operation held in Karachay-Cherkessia, law enforces detained a group of four local residents. All detainees are suspected of committing crimes in the territory of Russia. During the search, law enforcers seized from the detainees an RGD-5 grenade, a Kalashnikov submachine gun, two pistols, transformed from gas and traumatic ones to fire with live ammunition, and ammunition to them.
