UNM calls to condemn Russia's actions in South Ossetia and Abkhazia

The "United National Movement" (UNM) Party has initiated the drafting an appeal to the international community, in which, according to the party, it is necessary to declare "the Russia’s annexation in Georgia." The party's initiative is ill-conceived and populist, Georgian political analysts believe.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 7, the authorities of the Russian Federation submitted for President Putin’s signature a draft agreement with South Ossetia on the inclusion of the army units of this republic into the Armed Forces of Russia. On March 14, Mr Putin instructed to sign this agreement.

"We see that Russia is conducting a full military mobilization against Georgia and Ukraine with the aim to strengthen its offensive potentials, which creates a danger in the Black Sea water area," the press service of the UNM quotes Salome Samadashvili, an MP from the party.

The UNM believes that "the time has come to oppose the Russia’s aggression." The international community "should use political and economic levers against Russia."

The "United Democratic Movement" and the "Free Democrats" refused to cooperate with the UNM.

Ramaz Sakvarelidze, a political expert of the "Club of Independent Experts", has noted that "a number of UNM’s initiatives are aimed not at the benefit, but to the detriment of Georgia." The party "needs a conflict and tension in relations with Russia," he believes.
