Case against Igor Stenin closed

Today, the Presidium of the Astrakhan Regional Court has considered a cassation appeal filed by advocate Tatiana Ivanushkina against the verdict to nationalist Igor Stenin and pronounced the decision to close the case because of the absence of corpus delicti.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in April, it became known that the Supreme Court (SC) of Russia ordered the Presidium of the Astrakhan Regional Court to consider a complaint against the verdict to Igor Stenin.

On May 16, 2016, Igor Stenin, the leader of the movement "Russians of Astrakhan", was sentenced to two years of imprisonment in a penal colony-settlement for reposting in a social network the articles about the war in Ukraine. The defence tried to explain that it was a comment posted by another user under the Igor Stenin's record.

Let us remind you that the defence of Igor Stenin has also sent a complaint against the verdict to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). The Human Rights Centre (RC) "Memorial" has called the criminal prosecution of Igor Stenin politically motivated. According to the human rights defenders, the investigators, the Prosecutor's Office and the Court "showed an extreme degree of bias".
