Abkhazia accuses Georgia of unwillingness to cooperate in case of Gigi Otkhozoriya's killing
The case against Rashid Kandji-ogly, sentenced in absentia under the charge of killing Gigi Otkhozoriya, has been closed in connection with the fact that Georgia did not provide the necessary investigative materials. This was reported by Adgur Agrba, Military Prosecutor of Abkhazia.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 19, 2016, Gigi Otkhozoriya, a resident of the Gali District of Abkhazia, was fatally wounded in the border village of Khurcha. The Abkhazian authorities have suggested that Gigi Otkhozoriya himself attacked border guard Rashid Kandji-ogly, who shot and fatally wounded him. On December 27, 2016, the Zugdidi District Court sentenced Kandji-ogly to 12 years of imprisonment. On March 10, the court in Kutaisi extended the term of imprisonment for Kandji-ogly up to 14 years.
The case of the Gigi Otkhozoriya's murder has been closed in connection with the absence of corpus delicti. This was told to the "Satellite-Abkhazia" by Adgur Agrba, Military Prosecutor of Abkhazia.
According to him, the Abkhazian side has repeatedly requested the Georgian investigating authorities to provide the materials on the inspection of the place of the incident, the data on the examination of the body, and the video records. However, no documents have been provided. Adgur Agrba has noted that without such materials and evidence base, the case cannot be sent to court.
The EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) called the release of Rashid Kandji-ogly a "fact of non-execution of justice, which brought much disappointment."
