ECtHR asks Russia to clarify its position in Murad Amriev's case

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has appealed to the Russian authorities with questions about what measures are planned to be taken to prevent possible violence against Murad Amriev, detained in Belarus. This has been reported today by the "Committee for the Prevention of Torture".

On June 4, in the Bryansk Region, Murad Amriev was detained on the charge of using a forged document. The police released Murad Amriev, but he was cordoned off by law enforcers in masks. However, he managed to escape. According to the "Novaya Gazeta", Amriev was cordoned off by law enforcers from Chechnya. On June 8, Murad Amriev was detained by border guards in the Belarusian city of Dobrush.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 8, lawyers of the "Committee for the Prevention of Torture" got a response from the ECtHR, reporting that the Murad Amriev's case had been given priority.

The "Committee for the Prevention of Torture" has got the second letter from the ECtHR, in which it further requests Russia to answer questions about whether the Russian authorities made a formal request for the extradition of Murad Amriev from Belarus, and if so, on what grounds, and whether the athlete will be detained in Russia, and if so, where he will be kept and on what grounds, the "Committee for the Prevention of Torture" reports.

Besides, taking into account the Murad Amriev's complaints about torture and kidnapping, the ECtHR has also requested Russia to answer what measures the authorities plan to take in order to prevent a repetition of the risk of torture and kidnapping. The Russian government is to respond to the ECtHR by July 5, reports the message posted today on the website of the human rights organization.
