Dagestani activists: guilt of "Union of the Just" leader not proven

In Rostov-on-Don, the North-Caucasian District Military Court is nearing the end of the consideration in the case against Khiramagomed Magomedov, one of the leaders of the NGO "Union of the Just". This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Abakar Abakarov, a public figure from Dagestan, one of the organizers of the rally against Caucasus-phobia and Islamophobia in Moscow.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in January 2014, it became known that Khiramagomed (Muhammad) Magomedov was suspected of involvement in an extremist organization. According to the activist, the initiation of the case was provoked by his participation in the conference "Problems of Islam in Russia" held in Moscow in 2012.

At the previous court hearing, public prosecutor requested the Court to sentence the defendant to 15 years of imprisonment. Abakar Abakarov notes that the punishment requested by the public prosecutor is too severe even with all the charges filed against Khiramagomed Magomedov.

Abakar Abakarov believes that the Khiramagomed Magomedov's guilt has not been proven. In particular, according to the activist, the case materials testify to the fabrication of the charge with illegal possession of weapons.

According to him, Khiramagomed Magomedov is well known in Dagestan for his engagement in human rights activities.

"He has repeatedly taken part in various forums and roundtables held at the federal level, and he was engaged in activities to prevent violations from law enforcers against Russian citizens. Many people well-known throughout Russia know him in person, and it is clear that all that would be impossible if he was a terrorist," the activist believes.
