Georgia condemns engineering works on South-Ossetian border

The works begun today and treated by South Ossetia as restoration of the fire-fighting band are the equipment of the borderline, which contrary to the interests of local residents, said Ketevan Tsikhelashvili, the Georgian Minister for Reconciliation and Civil Equality.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in South Ossetia Russian border guards are equipping the border with Georgia and installing engineering barriers and fences. According to local residents, the barbed wire, set up by border guards, runs right across dwelling settlements.

"This is the continuation of the so-called ‘borderization’ process and one of the forms of barricades that have been erected for several years already," Ms Tsikhelashvili has stated, noting that yesterday, on August 2, residents of Artsevy and other villages demanded from South-Ossetian authorities to be able to get closer to the territory controlled by Georgia. "It’s better to meet the population’s interests than go against them. Such actions undertaken by the current regime in the conditions of occupation are against human interests," said the Minister.
