MoD requests 500 recruits from Chechnya
Out of the more than 80,000 Chechen residents of conscription age, 500 people will be selected within the autumn draft campaign which began on October 1. Local residents are attracted by military service with the opportunity to build a career.
The first large-scale calling up for military service of conscripts from Chechnya for the past 22 years was held in the autumn of 2014. The ranks of the Russian army were replenished by 500 recruits from Chechnya. Since then, the quota has not been changed.
While selecting conscripts from Chechnya, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) prefers to recruit young people with higher or secondary special education, sports ranks, and driving licenses.
"Chechen conscripts will perform military service in Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don, Vladikavkaz, Pyatigorsk, Crimea, and Sevastopol," said an official from the military enlistment office.
According to him, the number of Chechen conscripts wishing to perform the military service has significantly increased in recent years.
Young residents of Chechnya interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reported their desire to serve in the army and associated their plans for life with the military service.
"In Chechnya, military service has always been considered to be an occupation worthy of men," said Akhmad, a resident of the republic.
"The army provides good career prospects. After the military service, a man can sign a contract to stay in the army or to start working at the police and other law enforcement agencies," believes Isa, a resident of Grozny.
