Georgian Parliament overcomes presidential veto

At an extraordinary meeting, members of the Georgian Parliament have overcome the presidential veto, imposed on the six provisions of the Georgian Constitution. 110 MPs voted "against" and 8 others "in favour."

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 26, the Georgian Parliament adopted a new Constitution in the final reading. On October 9, the Georgian President imposed a veto on the Draft Constitution.

Today, MPs have considered the presidential veto on six provisions of the Georgian Constitution. 8 MPs voted "in favour", while 110 other MPs voted "against." According to the regulations, in case of overcoming the veto, a Draft Constitution in the initial version, which was supported by 117 MPs and opposed by 7 other MPs, should be presented for voting, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

Let us remind you that earlier, all three opposition parliamentary parties, including the "United National Movement" (UNM), the "European Georgia", and the "Alliance of Patriots", have announced their boycotting the Draft Constitution after they failed to reach a consensus with the "Georgian Dream" Party. On September 19, Giorgi Margvelashvili and members of 20 opposition parties came forward with a single draft of changes to the Constitution and demanded to introduce a proportional system and maintain the direct presidential election.
